United Policyholders (UP) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to be a trustworthy and useful information resource and an effective voice for consumers of all types of insurance in all 50 states.

UP's work is divided into three programs:

  • Roadmap to Recovery provides tools and resources for solving insurance problems after an accident, loss, illness, or other adverse event. For example, the program provides free, trustworthy help navigating the process of returning to a wildfire damaged area, repairing and replacing damaged and destroyed property, and collecting all available insurance funds.
  • Roadmap to Preparedness promotes disaster preparedness and insurance literacy through outreach and education in partnership with civic, faith based, business, and other non-profit associations.
  • Advocacy and Action advances pro-consumer laws and public policy related to insurance matters.

Safer from Wildfires is an interagency partnership between Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara and the emergency response and readiness agencies in Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration to protect lives, homes, and businesses by reducing wildfire risk.

The program's “ground up” approach for wildfire resilience has three layers of protection — for the structure, the immediate surroundings, and the community — to prevent wildfire from catching and spreading to other homes and businesses in the neighborhood.

The Gathering Inn Mid Placer is a 100 bed emergency housing and services program located at the DeWitt Campus in Auburn, CA.

The Gathering Inn is staffed 24/7 and employs 4 full-time Case Managers who work with guests to identify and work through barriers to housing by discussing how to increase income, providing a connection to education, and securing sustainable housing.

Case Managers then provide follow-up support for up to 1 year in an effort to reduce homelessness.

Mid Placer provides:

  • Safety and security on campus
  • 3 meals a day
  • Clean clothing
  • Bedding
  • Shower facilities
  • Use of electricity to run CPAP and Oxygen machines
  • Life skills courses
  • Drug and alcohol recovery meetings
  • Additional groups intended to help guests with individual development, and to transition guests from homelessness to housing

The Gathering Inn South Placer Emergency Shelter is a nomadic shelter located in Roseville. This shelter welcomes individuals and families. Partnerships with churches throughout Placer County make this program possible by providing guests with a meal and a safe place to sleep. Intakes and case management are offered 7 days/week.

The Gathering Inn provides a variety of services – some just for people in their program or on the waiting list, and others for the wider community of people in need. People can get on the waiting list by calling 211 and ALSO calling TGI to confirm they want to receive services and get into the program.

Hospitality House offers two transportation programs: Homeless Access Transport (HAT) and Older Adults Access Transport.

  • Both services are free and donations are welcome on the Older Adults Access Transport van.
  • Vans have lifts for wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
  • The service area is basically from the Brighton Greens Department of Social Services office in the south to the Rood Center in Nevada City in the north.

PG&E's Wildfire Recovery Support seeks to keep customers and communities safe.

PG&E is partnering with customers in high fire-threat areas to create safe space between distribution lines and trees and brush that can act as fuel for wildfires. Customers can use the tools on the PG&E website to find out if they are in a high fire-threat area and if they are in an area where the power may be shut off for safety.

During or After a Wildfire

  • Ask about bill payment assistance
  • Immediately stop service
  • Learn more about power restoration, financial support and the rebuilding process
