The Penn Valley Fire Protection District (PVFPD) provides fire protection, paramedics and emergency ambulance rescue, residential fire and life inspections, fire information and safety presentations, fire education to the public, and a firefighter intern program for students considering a career in the Fire Services.

The district operates three fire stations, two of which are staffed twenty-four hours a day with a minimum of two personnel. The third station relies on off-duty personnel for staffing.

About The Map:

The CPUC High Fire-Threat District Map includes three fire-threat areas:

Zone 1 consists of Tier 1 High-Hazard Zones (HHZs) from the United States Forest Service (USFS) and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) joint map of Tree Mortality HHZs. Tier 1 HHZs (CAL FIRE) are in direct proximity to communities, roads, and utility lines, and are a direct threat to public safety.

The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County has a variety of programs designed to increase fire safety in wildfire country.

• Access & Functional Needs (AFN) - Low-income senior residents or those with medical disabilities may qualify for assistance with defensible space clearing.
• Defensible Space Advisory Visit (DSAV) - This program provides a one-on-one consultation at your home for comprehensive education on compliance with defensible space requirements around structures.
• Chipping Program - The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County offers low-cost ($75/hr) chipping of brush cleared for defensible space of any permanent structure, and/or 30 feet from any roadside or driveway used for evacuation purposes.

USDA's Fire and Food Safety offers useful information to the public.

Generally, saving food that's been in a fire is not a good idea. Food exposed to fire can be compromised by three factors: the heat of the fire, smoke fumes, and chemicals used to fight fire.

Heat from the Fire

​Food in cans or jars may appear to be okay, but if they've been close to the HEAT of a fire, they may no longer be safe. Why? Heat from a fire can activate food spoilage bacteria. If the heat is extreme, the cans or jars themselves can split or rupture, rendering the food unsafe.

Fumes from a Fire

​One of the most dangerous elements of a fire is sometimes not the fire itself, but toxic fumes released from burning materials. Those fumes can kill; they can also contaminate food.

​Chemicals used to fight fires contain toxic materials and can contaminate food and cookware.
